CONTEST MECHANICS

If your character is a co-ordinator, chances are you're going to at some point want to enter a contest. Luckily, here is where you can find out everything you need in order to enter and participate in one, maybe even earn a ribbon if you're good enough! If you manage to win your first one, aim for five! Five total ribbons nets you a place in the region's Grand Festival.

Contest Basics

Entering
Unlike Gym Battles, all contests are organised by the site staff, with only one or two ever going on at the same time over a period of a few weeks. In order to enter one in the first place, your character will have to reach the town or city where the contest is taking place and then submit their name for entry in the contest's application thread.
When applying to enter a contest, you need to submit six possible Pokemon for entry. You will then be required to narrow this down to 3(in a normal contest) or 4(in a doubles contest) once the contest's theme is revealed. These chosen 3 or 4 should be PMed to the staff member in charge of the contest before you post your appeal so that they can include them in the master post of the signup thread, but choose wisely as your choice cannot be altered once submitted. Not all entered Pokemon need to be used in a contest, but you cannot use Pokemon that have not been entered.

Themes
Every contest has a theme that can be anything from Light to Elegance or something in between. However, there will be a few possibilities given for the contest's theme during the application process, though the actual theme will never be decided before the signups are complete in order to prevent people from getting a head start into writing their appeals.
Themes for normal contests are usually simple words and are open to interpretation as long as it still remotely fits the theme. Grand Festivals are the only contests that don't have themes and thus enable the entrants to show of their own style and skills in a way they are most comfortable with.

Types of Contest
Contests come in three types, Normal, Double and Grand Festival. A normal contest is one where each co-ordinator uses a single pokemon in each round. A double contest is one where a co-ordinator uses two pokemon in each round. The only exception is where a normal contest will sometimes use a Double Performance appeal round rather than the standard Single performance, though this is pretty rare.
A Grand Festival can be either a Normal or a Double contest and requires five ribbons and thus five previous contest wins for entry. These special contests happen only once every other season and the winner gains the title Top Coordinator. If one enters a Grand Festival and loses, they may use their five ribbons to enter next time, however a winner's ribbons cannot be used to enter the Grand Festival again and if they wish to do so they must win five more contests and thus five more ribbons.

Contest Rounds
Every contest is divided into two parts; the Appeals Round and the Battle Rounds.

Appeals Round
The appeals round is the first round of any contest and the main goal is to show off your Pokemon's skill and beauty whilst sticking to that contest's provided theme. As explained in the types of contest section, different contests have different rules, but generally only one or two Pokemon perform in this round. Only the eight co-ordinators with the highest appeal scores will move on to the battle rounds. If there are less than eight users participating in the contest, the empty spaces will be filled with NPCs controlled by site staff.

An appeal can be up to a maximum of 500 words. This represents your time limit to perform your appeal and thus only the appeal part of your post will count towards this number. Anything your character does before the appeal, e.g team pep talks, waiting for the curtain to be drawn up etc, won't take away from those 500 words. Each appeal will be checked in a word counter and if it still exceeds 500 words when judging begins you will be disqualified. There is however a small amount of leeway over the maximum, about 5 words or so, where your character will be allowed to remain in the contest.

Appeals are to be written and submitted within a time frame of 5 days after the contest's theme has been announced and any co-ordinators who do not submit their appeal before the end of this time frame will be excluded and the contest will move on without them, essentially disqualifying them from the contest. After the five days are up, a further two days will be allocated for the judging of the appeals, the names of those moving on to the battle rounds being revealed on the 7th day.

Battle Rounds
Those that have the highest scores in the appeals round move on to the Battle Rounds. These rounds can have either a Single battle or a Double battle format and the idea of these rounds is to continue to show off the Pokemon's skill and beauty whilst attempting to defeat their opponent. Each contest has three rounds of battles in which the remaining eight participants that lasted through the appeal rounds take part in. The rounds are completed tournament style, with the loser being eliminated and the winner moving on to battle another winner. Unlike the appeal rounds it is common for co-ordinators to stray from the theme but those who do manage to stick to it often score very highly with the judges should their Pokemon last the round.

Each battle will take place in a separate thread made by the site staff, with the two co-ordinators each picking either one or two Pokemon per battle depending on the style of contest. The staff will randomise who makes the first move in the battle and will PM said user that they need to make their first move. Each thread will go on for a maximum of three pages before time runs out and the thread is submitted for judging. The winner will move on to the next round and will then battle the winner of one of the other battles, and so on until there are no more opponents and the remaining co-ordinator is awarded the ribbon from that contest. Please allow at least 3 days or so for the judges to finish making their decision for a battle round thread as there are many variables to consider. If you are still waiting after this, feel free to PM the staff in charge and ask how things are going.

As a side note, in contest battles the amount of EXP your Pokemon has is irrelevant and all Pokemon entering the contest will be treated with equal EXP levels. However you will still get an EXP reward for winning a contest battle.
Another point for contest battles is to make sure your character's pokemon aren't dodging and countering every single move that comes at them, making it fair for both participants. Those who are found to be doing this will have points deducted and it may well cost them the win.

Judging a Contest

Most of the time site staff are called upon to be the judges of a contest, as long as their characters are not actually entering. Naturally, someone who judges a contest cannot enter the contest they are judging. However there will be times when staff are unavailable, or participating and thus other members are needed to help judge.

In order to be considered for a contest judge position, you need to be extremely active, dependable and get on well with other members including the site staff, as discussion is a required factor of contest judging.

There is a list of judging criteria that will be given to judges to help them make their decisions. Everyone will give their initial verdicts and then time will be allowed for discussion before each judge has a short amount of time to alter their scoring as they see fit before a final average is taken. Once the average is taken, those with the lowest score will be eliminated in the appeal round. In the battle rounds things work a bit differently, but in the end the person with the lowest score is again eliminated.
