POKÉMON MECHANICS

LEVELS AND EXPERIENCE

Experience and Levels are a vital part of a pokemon's growth, while these are normally not acknowledged in character, the closest being to referencing how strong a pokemon is. In this forum, we gauge levels through experience, similar to the games, but with a slightly easier way of leveling up.

First thing worth mentioning is that pokemon here don't stop at level 100 as they do in the games and can keep going on forever. Each level requires a different amount of EXP, for example if you're level 5 and you get 1 exp, then you will become level 6, while if you're level 14 and you gain 1 exp, you would need another exp point to get to level 15.
It would take a while once the stronger levels are reached though, since the leveling pattern is as follows:

Levels 1-10 requires 1 experience [EXP]
11-20 requires 2
21-30 requires 3
31-40 requires 4
41-50 requires 5
51-60 requires 6
61-70 requires 7
The pattern will continue on indefinitely, but to put this in a nutshell, the higher leveled you are, the more experience you're going to need in order to level up. Experience is just about one of the only ways you can level up, and experience is earned through interaction.

EXP can be gained in the following ways:

 • As you roleplay a thread you gain pages. With every page you can distribute a single EXP Point to the Pokémon of your choice as long as it made an appearance in the thread.
 • With every Pokémon encounter there is an Experience giveout. If you complete the encounter goal you may dispense the give out between the Pokémon that helped complete the goal. For example, if you used two Pokémon for one encounter that was worth 3 experience, you could give one Pokémon all three EXP or split it between the two in 1 and 2. If an encounter doesn't involve any Pokémon then the trainer may give at least one point to each of the Pokémon in their party. If there are more points given out than there are Pokémon in the party you may assign more than one. For example, if you had 2 Pokémon in your party and would earn 4 EXP without using any Pokémon, each would get 2 points and it would be against the rules to give one 3 and the other 1. If two characters are involved in an encounter they divide the give out however they agree with, but they must both be involved in the encounter.
 • The most uncommon way to get EXP is through Candies. Unlike the games, we have 5 different variations of the Rare Candy. If you have a Pokémon eat one it will gain 1-5 EXP depending on the type of Candy consumed. When having a Pokémon eat a Candy in character you may fluff it any way you like. It doesn't have to be a traditional candy. You could make it a special pill or some Pokémon food or even a special drink if you want! Typically, the rarer the Candy the more tasty and/or rare it will be! Candy is just a general term. The candy rarities are as follows:

Odd Candy - 1 EXP
Rare Candy - 2 EXP
Premium Candy - 3 EXP
Supreme Candy - 4 EXP
Ultimate Candy - 5 EXP

LEVEL 0 AND COMPANION POKÉMON

Companion Pokemon are an optional feature that allows you to have extra pokemon with you, but that seventh pokemon cannot battle. Companion Pokemon can be with the character at any time, but they will not be able to participate in any battles, contests, or gyms, however they can spectate. Should the pokemon be included in the main party, the companion pokemon becoming eligible for battle, another pokemon will have to either be swapped for that pokemon or be sent to the Pokemon Storage System to make room if there would be more than 6 in the party.

The reason that this is here is because newly hatched pokemon are considered level 0. These pokemon don't have a single battle in their EXP, and cannot battle until they reach level 1 through obtaining 1 EXP. Once they have obtained 1 EXP, they must either become a companion pokemon, be fitted into the party, or sent to the Pokemon Storage System. You can have a maximum of two Companion and/or Level 0 Pokémon with you at a time.

BATTLES

Unlike many other Pokémon sites, here we have very loose battling rules. We like to give people more freedom when battling. Roleplaying is supposed to tell a story, and in a story you should only be limited by your imagination (within reason). Currently, our only battle restriction is to be reasonable. You won't be able to throw off Hydro Pumps left and right or pull off four moves in a row. Also, keep levels in mind while battling. If your Pokémon's levels is much lower than your opponent's, you have an very slim chance of winning the battle.

For example, an Oshawott at Level 15 against a Roselia at Level 5 would have a good chance of winning because of its higher amount of Levels. even with the type disadvantage. If the levels were closer, such as if the Oshawott was at Level 13 and the Roselia was at 10, with the type advantage the Roselia would most likely win, assuming in both cases that the Roselia has super effective grass moves. Of course, a Magikarp with a large amount of levels will struggle with battles and a Legendary Pokémon with only a small quantity of levels would still be pretty strong.

Since we are statless, you may think that status moves have no effect. Instead, they can be used however it is reasonable. A Pokémon could use the move Leer to intimidate or Tickle to stop another Pokemon (or trainer!) from doing anything! You can also use regular attacking moves similarly. For example, you could use Dig to get away from an opponent or use Quick Attack for a speed boost.

Abilities can work in a similar way. You don't have to use them in there normal ways, especially since many don't translate perfectly into our statless system. Take Riolu for example. Riolu's Steadfast and Inner Focus abilities conflict each other, so it might take a bit of thought to figure out how to deal with it. Maybe only Steadfast takes effect and Inner Focus is treated as an ability that makes it easy to concentrate, or perhaps it was trained to strategically switch between which ability it uses when it's flinched. Pokemon with the Telepathy abilities would be able to telepathically communicate with others, but this ability would be weak at first and become stronger the more levels it gets.

Encounters
Here we utilize a modding system that does not require too much work on the staff's end, so it is likely you won't have to worry about a mod posting too often. Instead of posting as NPCs and controlling events with the characters in a thread, a mod will just create an encounter for the characters to roleplay out and post it. You will need to request an encounter to be brought to the thread, HERE! Almost all of the encounters possible will fit the following categories:

Pokémon Encounters
These encounters are likely going to be the most common. They are wild Pokémon that characters may find on their journey. The descriptions for them can be vague and give you a lot of freedom, such as just a Starly with no other information given,  while others may be specific, such a Starly with a hurt wing sleeping under a tree.

Pokémon encounters will have three main stats to focus on: A level, an EXP give out, and a Satisfaction Goal. The level determines how strong the encounter his and is there in case you battle or catch it. The EXP Give out is the EXP points you give to your Pokémon once you complete the Satisfaction Goal. The Satisfaction Goal is how to "complete" an encounter. The mod will spawn something and you have a hinted goal in mind, for example saying that the pokemon's fur/skin seems to be singed and stinging would mean you could probably heal it with an item or a pokemon with a status curing move, you will receive the full EXP from the encounter if you either figure out the intended goal or come up with a more creative way to play the encounter. Failure to do so will result in the EXP being halved and rounded down.

Trainer Encounters
Trainer Encounters are much like singular Pokémon encounters, where a trainer is detailed and their Pokémon team is listed. A Trainer can be as detailed or as vague as a mod wishes and each Pokémon in their party has information like that of a regular Pokémon encounter, although with typically lower EXP Give outs unlike in the games, seeing as there is normally more than one to a Trainer. However, the Trainer itself has its own Satisfaction Goal and Energy Give out that can be fulfilled like a regular Pokémon.

Item Encounters
Item Encounters are just that: items. A mod might spawn you an item that one of the characters in a thread can find. They might note its location, but other than that these are just plain old items.

MOVES

Moves are a bit different here, as the way for pokemon to learn moves is slightly different from the games. Here, moves are learned as the pokemon level up like in the games and TMs can be taught at any time, but can only be used once.

The difference, is you can request for a pokemon to be tutored a specific move that is not usually available to them. For example, a Skiddo wants to learn Grassy Terrain. The move is not natural to the pokemon even through Egg Moves and TMs, but you can request the pokemon to learn the desired move in THIS thread.

The moderators can examine the move and the pokemon's strength, then determine whether or not it would be reasonable for the pokemon to learn it and if they seem like they could, whether or not they would be strong enough to handle the move. We also ask that you keep track of what moves your pokemon have learned, no matter how they learned it, so you'll be able to re-learn it for a cheaper price if you want that specific move once more.

Each Pokemon begins with 5 move slots instead of four, and as you level up to a multiple of ten, you gain another move slot. Like so;

1-10 has 5 Move Slots
11-20 has 6 Move Slots
21-30 has 7 Move Slots
and so on..

CATCHING POKÉMON
To catch a Pokémon you must, of course, possess a Pokéball. Whether or not a Pokéball will capture is determined by the EXP Total of an encounter relative to the average of the Pokémon with the highest EXP Total and the one with the lowest EXP Total in your party at the time of capture. Determining which Pokéball can catch which Pokémon is as follows:

A normal Pokéball can catch any Pokémon with an Level Total equal or less than your highest as long as the Pokémon's level is less than 20.
A Great Ball can catch any Pokémon with a level equal or less than your average regardless of the being higher than level 20.
An Ultra ball can catch any Pokémon up to 10 levels higher than your average or lower.
A Master Ball can catch any Pokémon that is marked catchable.

More Pokéballs will be added in the future. You may only capture one Pokémon per character per thread, so choose wisely. If a Pokémon is marked as uncapturable you cannot capture it, of course.

BEGINNING POKEMON

Pokemon that you begin with are not limited other than the usual no legendary pokemon, rotom, or phione. They cannot start off evolved if they evolve by trade, location, and item, but if they can evolve at or past the level they start at then they may start off evolved. That rule mostly goes for bug Pokemon and their typically low evolution levels, but it goes for any Pokemon evolving that early. Your beginning pokemon will have Five move slots available, and you can have up to three starter pokemon.

You may also have them start with one egg move or a level up move that is learned at a later level. However, your pokemon levels must add up to 10, meaning you could put 7 levels in one pokemon and 3 in another. Pokemon may begin in Eggs, but in their bio application you must state what pokemon they are and they will take up 1 of your ten levels. These eggs can be hatched whenever you wish.
